On 24 February, despite protests from people throughout the world, Russia’s military invaded eastern Ukraine and launched attacks on Ukraine's military facilities and cities, including Kyiv and Odessa. This clearly is an act of aggression against its neighbouring country and tramples on the UN Charter and international law. One-sided military attacks, whatever the reason, cannot be condoned.
We strongly protest Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia must cease its military actions immediately and withdraw from the territory of Ukraine.
At the same time, on 19 February President Putin, in military exercises which he directly commanded, launched nuclear capable intercontinental ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles. At the beginning of military action against Ukraine, during a televised speech on 24 February, President Putin said, "Even after the dissolution of the USSR and losing a considerable part of its capabilities, today's Russia remains one of the most powerful nuclear states … There should be no doubt for anyone that any potential aggressor will face defeat and ominous consequences should it directly attack our country." This statement represents a direct threat to use nuclear weapons. Furthermore, on 27 February, he stated that he would place the nuclear deterrence force on high alert, justifying this on the grounds of aggressive comments by NATO countries. For the sake of humanity, these statements, which represent direct threats to use nuclear weapons, cannot be overlooked.
In order to prevent such barbarism, all countries must sign and ratify the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty.
As doctors and dentists who protect life and health, we strongly demand that Russia immediately cease its military action and withdraw from Ukraine.
